The following essay is intended to accompany my final project in the Process Work Diploma/Master of Arts program; a creative arts venture with both educational and social action components, entitled, “The Circus Project.” The Circus Project, now a registered nonprofit, was designed as an experimental training ground for the creation of an innovative methodology for working with at?risk1 and homeless youth, based on the integration of circus, theatre, and Process Oriented Psychology. The intention of the project was to demonstrate how techniques in Process Oriented Psychology could be applied to circus and theatre arts in various aspects of the creation process within the population of homeless and at?risk teens and young adults. It was hoped that the integration of circus arts and Process Work would empower disadvantaged youth in a variety of ways, while offering an emerging methodology which leaders in the
fields of theatre and circus arts could successfully utilize to create new and invigorating forms of artistic expression. In addition to offering a description of my personal background, the project, and a discussion of its relevancy to Process Work, this essay seeks to assert the significant benefits Process Work is capable of contributing to the crafting of meaningful and skilled art that impowers both the participants and the wider audiences for which they perform.
A project of this magnitude could not be embarked upon without the financial,
organizational, and emotional support of a number of people. While any attempt to publicly acknowledge the myriad of volunteers, collaborators and funders is bound to be incomplete, there are a few key players whom I feel compelled to mention, without whom, The Circus Project would not have blossomed into fruition. Cette recherche se situe dans le domaine des arts populaires et communautaires et dans une perspective pédagogique des arts du cirque. Elle porte davantage sur les aspects relationnels et artistiques que sur les aspects techniques des arts du cirque. Ces derniers sont abordés dans la perspective plus large du développement de la personne. La présente étude fait appel aux sous-champs disciplinaires de la résilience et de la créativité, dans un contexte pédagogique l'éducation populaire. Il s'agit d'une étude descriptive qui se fonde principalement à une expérience personnelle de terrain tout en se référant à des documents portant sur Cirque du Monde, un programme d'action sociale fondé par le Cirque du Soleil et Jeunesse du Monde. L'objet de la recherche est de faire la lumière sur la pédagogie alternative - dite circulaire -préconisée par ce programme et plus particulièrement d'exposer les moyens dont dispose l'artiste social afin de favoriser le développement de la résilience chez les jeunes participants des ateliers de cirque social. Pour ce faire, cette étude s'appuie notamment sur les écrits de Paulo Freire sur la pédagogie des opprimés, sur ceux de Boris Cyrulnik pour aborder la résilience et sur ceux de Yves Saint-Arnaud pour cerner l'expérience créatrice et la relation coopératrice. L'intention qui sous-tend cette recherche vise une meilleure compréhension du rôle de l'artiste social dans son interrelation avec des jeunes qui vivent des difficultés et l'exclusion de leur communauté. Cet article propose d’étudier le travail de théorisation enracinée à partir d’une thèse sur la pratique des arts du cirque à destination de jeunes dits en difficulté dans le Nord de la France. On y voit que l’ancrage est un processus complet, de l’entrée sur le terrain à l’écriture finale, qui a comporté, dans ce cas précis, une dimension sensible qui a d’abord surpris, puis peu à peu été assumée par le chercheur. Le recueil des informations avec ses découvertes puis leur saturation et leurs analyses comparées en fonction de diverses triangulations, suivies d’une montée en conceptualisation longue en maturation, furent des étapes constitutives d’une théorisation ancrée spécifique. En échappant à une pensée pré-définie, elle permet grâce à une posture d’enracinement sensible dans le présent, de développer des ressentis mis au service de la compréhension vive du terrain, de ses acteurs, de ce qu’ils vivent et de ce qu’ils en disent. This book is designed for readers who care about their communities and are willing to create institutions and negotiate for meaningful roles for young people (cf. Rabkin and Redmond 2004). Explanations supported by theory and research from across the disciplines address the need to think and to think hard about where and how the arts and young people fit together and in concert with moral reason, societal inclusion and environmental justice. To do otherwise is to risk denying the benefits that can come from the ingenious insights and seemingly endless energies and imaginative powers of the young. This book calls on us to think beyond “using” the arts for instrumental redirection of young individuals seen as being out-of-step with the larger society.
