This year the first contemporary circus studio in Baltics, Folie, celebrates its 15th anniversary. During this time, many dreams have come true, but there is still a lot to be achieved. Terje Bernardt, the founder and artistic director of Folie, shares the story of the long journey that it took to get the studio to where it is today. “Victor and the yellow globe”, the latest performance of Folie’s most experienced artists—programmed by festival RE RE RIGA! last year—could be considered the first professional contemporary circus show created in Baltic states. In this issue of “Next Door Circus,” Terje and
the performers explain their creation process, their inspirations, and difficulties that one faces when creating a circus show. The anniversary of Folie is not the only important thing happening in Estonia this
year. It seems that Tallin is becoming a capital for circus arts in Baltics. Three new festivals taking place, an umbrella organisation for circus has been founded—lots of things are happening! That is why this issue is largely dedicated to Estonian circus arts. Winter is the quiet season for circus festivals,
so we took some time to look back at festivals that Next Door Circus attended this year. Two major points of interest: the commitment to education and local circus development demonstrated at New Circus
Weekend in Vilnius, and the CIRCa festival’s social and economic impact in the region of Auch, France.
The Second issue of “Next Door Circus Magazine” is here. It has been one year since Next Door Circus was officially founded. Here you can read about what we have done in our first year, as well as about what we are preparing to do in future. We want be a place where good practices and inspiring stories of our colleagues, in Baltics and abroad, are shared. Let’s start the year with great examples of successful circus adventures!
