A comprehensive study of one of the most versatile artists and acute observers of our time, who fuses art and fashion, American artist Sterling Ruby works in a large variety of media, including sculpture, ceramics, painting, and video art. Ruby is influenced by a wide range of sources, including marginalized societies, maximum-security prisons, modernist architecture, artefacts and antiquities, graffiti, waste and consumption, and urban gangs. Through these, he examines the psychological space where individual expression confronts social constraint.

This anthology investigates materiality in art that attempts to expand notions of time, space, process or participation. It looks at materials that obstruct, disrupt or interfere with social norms, surfacing as impure formations and messy, unstable substances. It re-examines the notion of 'dematerialization'; addresses materialist critiques of artistic production; surveys the relationship between materiality and bodies; explores the vitality of substances, and the concepts of intermateriality and transmateriality that have emerged in the hybrid zones of digital experimentation. Dans un article paru en 1999 dans Le Débat, Nathalie Heinich proposait de considérer l'art contemporain comme un genre de l'art, différent de l'art moderne comme de l'art classique. Il s'agissait d'en bien marquer la spécificité - un jeu sur les frontières ontologiques de l'art - tout en accueillant la pluralité des définitions de l'art susceptibles de coexister. Quinze ans après, la « querelle de l'art contemporain » n'est pas éteinte, stimulée par l'explosion des prix, la spectacularisation des propositions et le soutien d'institutions renommées, comme l'illustrent les « installations » controversées à Versailles.

Dans ce nouveau livre, l'auteur pousse le raisonnement à son terme : plus qu'un « genre » artistique, l'art contemporain fonctionne comme un nouveau paradigme, autrement dit « une structuration générale des conceptions admises à un moment du temps », un modèle inconscient qui formate le sens de la normalité.

Nathalie Heinich peut dès lors scruter en sociologue les modalités de cette révolution artistique dans le fonctionnement interne du monde de l'art : critères d'acceptabilité, fabrication et circulation des oeuvres, statut des artistes, rôle des intermédiaires et des institutions... Par le biais des œuvres, les artistes font état de la très grande diversité des relations qui existent entre l’humain et l’animal et abordent cette question dans une perspective très large. As more and more text is being communicated via digital media, books are increasingly being used and explored in contemporary art, installation, and design. Although the role of books is being aggressively questioned in our digital age, they continue to be objects of desire with an allure that goes far beyond their commercial value. Given this medium's persistent evolution over time, it should come as no surprise that the book has come to be a focus for many artists around the world. As texts have become readily available through different media, contemporary artists have increasingly been exploring the interplay between the function, structure, and format of books--often literally deconstructing them using scalpels and knives.
