He shows that this venerable entertainment genre is indubitably more illusion, performed by monumentally clever practitioners, than magic. Brother-and-sister mind-reading act Charles and Lilian Morritt perfected a silent code based on synchronized counting that defied cagey observers' abilities to detect, let alone understand. Charles went on to realize the sleight central to Houdini's disappearing elephant bit, and that is just one of the delicious connections Steinmeyer points out among performers who seem to constitute a fellowship. New Magic as an artification movement : from speech event to change processIn recent years, a small but prolific network of French magicians and their allies have taken calculated, systematic, and very public steps to reposition magic as a form of high culture, produced and received according to a set of distinctively artistic criteria, and linked institutionally to the realm of fine arts. They call what they are doing ‘new magic’ (la magie nouvelle). This article takes a conversation analytic approach to a verbal disagreement between one of new magic’s principal proponents and a relatively senior music scholar who questions how art-like new magic really is. The speakers mutually accomplish the activity of arguing by realizing associated design features such as negative personal assessments, overlapping talk, format tying, sarcasm, bald directives, and interruption. In so doing, they also co-construct interactional identities as cultural insurgent and cultural gatekeeper, shaping this particular speech event as a skirmish in a conflictual and unresolved process of artification. Illusions : l'art de la magieCe livre réunit 230 affiches de l’âge d’or de la magie, époque où les Herrmann, Kellar, Thurston et bien sûr Houdini étaient les grands noms du divertissement populaire. Avec leurs couleurs vibrantes et leurs images fantasmagoriques, elles sont conçues pour faire rêver le passant et l’attirer au spectacle. Nombre d’affiches reproduites dans ce livre sont rarissimes. Elles proviennent de la collection Allan Slaight, un ensemble exceptionnel d’affiches et de documents sur Houdini qui font maintenant partie des collections du Musée McCord à Montréal. En plus d’expliquer les processus de fabrication de ces affiches, que l’on peut considérer aujourd’hui comme des œuvres d’art, cet ouvrage propose des points de vue souvent inédits sur le monde de la magie.
