Quelles pratiques et formes d’expression s’inventent à travers l’appropriation des technologies numériques ? En quoi le développement de ces technologies bouleverse les découpages entre champs disciplinaires, générant des pratiques transversales liant création artistique, recherche scientifique, développement technologique, pratiques médiatiques ?
Inversement, comment ces réagencements et recompositions dans les relations entre champs disciplinaires et usages des technologies nous conduisent-ils à réviser et à repenser le statut, la place et la fonction de la technique dans nos pratiques sociales et créatrices ? À travers la mise en jeu d’expériences et d’expérimentations poïétiques (arts de faire et faire de l’art) se dégagent des dynamiques et mutations générées par les développements technologiques actuels dans les pratiques d’invention et de création collective. La création artistique est aujourd'hui profondément marquée par le développement accéléré de ce que l'on nomme les nouvelles technologies (de la vidéo au numérique). De nombreux artistes s'approprient les possibilités inédites que celui-ci leur offre pour développer leurs intentions esthétiques et renouveler leurs pratiques artistiques. A comprehensive overview of the visionary work of the Japanese artist.Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (b.1929) has pursued her themes of infinite repetition, self-image and sexuality since she took the New York art world by storm in the late 1950s. Compulsively covering all surfaces in dots and repeated patterns or forms, Kusama has worked in painting, collage and assemblage and was a pioneer of installation art . The breach of art from religion is just one of the many unhappy legacies of modernism. There was a time, however, when the aesthetic and the spiritual were of a piece. This study of the work of American video artist Bill Viola considers the possible reemergence of a theological dimension to contemporary art--a reenchantment of art, as some have called it. Using the high-tech apparatus of modern video, Viola's art is rooted precisely in this theological tradition of transcendent mystical experience and spiritual self-concentration. The technological apotheosis of modern image-making--high speed film, high-definition video, LCD and plasma screens, and sophisticated sound recording--are put to use by Viola in ways that significantly challenge prevailing intellectual and artistic traditions and return us to the power of the Sublime--that which, by definition, defeats language. Viola's art as such converges with postmodern notions of the "unrepresentable" and with the ancient theological tradition of apophasis, "speaking away" or "unsaying." The fullness of "meaning," then, appears only as a promise of presence through embodied absence, neither fully here and now nor entirely elsewhere and beyond. This study seeks to define, through the work of a courageous and thoughtful contemporary artist, the theological sublime as an aesthetic of revelation.
