The art of collectivity : social circus and the cultural politics of a post-neoliberal vision

Spiegel, Jennifer Beth ; Choukroun, Benjamin Ortiz
Montréal : McGill-Queen's University Press , 2019

Amidst epidemics of youth alienation and cultural polarization, community-based artistic practices are sprouting up around the world as antidotes to policies of austerity and social exclusion. Rejecting the radical individualism of the neoliberal era, many artistic projects promote collectivity and togetherness in navigating challenges and constructing shared futures.

The Art of Collectivity is about how one such creative social program deployed this approach in service of a post-neoliberal vision. Focusing on a national social circus initiative launched by a newly elected Ecuadorean government to help actualize its “citizens' revolution,” the book explores the intersection between global cultural politics, participatory arts, collective health, and social transformation. The authors include scholars and practitioners of community arts, humanities, social sciences, and health sciences from the Global North and Global South. Sensitive to hierarchical binaries such as research/practice, north/south, and art/science, they work together to provide a multifaceted analysis of the way cultural politics shape policy, pedagogy, and aesthetic sensibilities, as well as their socio-cultural and health-related effects.

The largest study of social circus to date, combining detailed quantitative, qualitative, and arts-based research, The Art of Collectivity is a timely contribution to the study of cultural policies, critical pedagogies, collective art-making, and community development. [editor summary]

Creative collectivity : an introduction

Spiegel, Jennifer Beth
2019

Since the beginning of the millennium, artistic practices have been increasingly used as a response to austerity measures and policies of social exclusion. While social movements are drawing upon creative protest techniques, community organizations are launching arts-based social programs to offer tools to youth for surviving the ubiquitous culture of alienation. Whereas policies within this late capitalist (neoliberal) era tend to promote individuality, many of those resisting market-driven governance advocate for collectivity–that is to say, for acting together to navigate the various challenges and possibilities encountered. Sometimes social movements and artistic social a programs work in tandem toward a...

It's a secret except for those who are in it : an analysis of circus community and culture from insider's perspectives

Stern, Nikki
Kalamazoo : Kalamazoo College, 2012

The presence of a circus society and culture is studied using interviews and field observations. Research begins with an in-depth literary analysis of deviance and its influence on the construction of self-identified deviant identities and a respective deviant community and culture. Results acquired from field work are put into discussion alongside literary theorists, and dispute the application of deviance to circus. Literature concerning deviance uses incriminating language and examines deviance from an outsider's perspective. Thus, the application of deviance applies negative undertones to the subject under analysis and leads to misrepresentation as it is studied from an outsider's perspective. This paper argues that deviance is not an appropriate concept with which to analyze circus. Circus should rather be studied more autonomously along with an insider's perspective to highlight the positive aspects of uniting and constructing a shared identity, community and culture. Juggling agendas : circus in Ethiopia

Llewellyn,Leah
Leiden : Leiden University, 2011

The central research question is based on a tension between ideology and reality. Circus in Ethiopia for Youth and Social Development (CIE), aspires to play a role in promoting socio-economic change?. The premise that performance stimulates social transformation is the ideological basis of the "theatre for development" movement. The founding theoretician, Augusto Boal, explicitly articulates the relationship between politics and performance and proposed a new form of "liberation theatre" to act as a rehearsal for the "revolution".Supporters of such theatrical practise value popular performance as capable of stimulating social change through both the cohesive dimension of the creative process and its communicative capacity. Performance for social transformation is thus examined in both theoretical terms and in practise exemplified during "liberation" conflict in Ethiopia and analysed in detail through examples of contemporary circus performance. The central research question of this thesis is : Does circus performance in Ethiopia facilitate individual and social transformation? Secondary questions include : Has the history of political struggle been reflected through performance in Ethiopia ? Is circus performance being used as a tool for domestication? In what ways has international interest affected circuses at the local level? Are there tensions between artists individual ambitions and their social responsibility? How do specific performances communicate community issues? How is diversity and investment shaping the next generation of Ethiopian artists?

Social circus and health equity : exploring the national social circus program in Ecuador

Spiegel, Jennifer Beth ; Breilh, Maria-Christina ; Campaña, Arturo ; Marcuse, Judith ; Yassi, Annalee
Arts & Health : An International Journal for Research, Policy and Practice vol. 6 n°3, p. 1-10, june 2014

Social circus programs are expanding worldwide; however, little scholarship exists on their impact. Ecuador offers one of the world's largest government-sponsored programs, reaching almost 25,000 people annually. Aimed at promoting social solidarity and inclusion, programs are currently offered to street-involved youth, as well as children from marginalized communities and adults with disabilities. Identified tensions include the balancing of artistic versus social goals; integration of traditional social work approaches with social circus techniques and methodological challenges in evaluation. This program shows great promise and merits comprehensive interdisciplinary research, particularly regarding its impact on healthy equity. [authors summary]

Découvrir la sociologie avec le cirque

Boudon, Richard V.

Studying social circus : openings and perspectives : culture has an impact !

Effective Circus Project ; Kekäläinen, Katri ; Kakko, Sofia-Charlotta
Tampere (Finland) : Effective Circus Project, 2014

This article collection is the product of the Culture Has an Impact! seminar that was held in Tampere, Finland in December 2013. This celebration seminar was the high point of a 5-year run of two national social circus projects administrated by Tampere University’s Centre for Practise as Research in Theatre. The seminar was organized partly in collaboration with the Aladdin’s Lamp network of Pirkanmaa region and the Effective Circus project. The Effective Circus project (2011-2014) continued the work started with the national Social Circus
project (2009-2011). Both projects were funded by the European Social Fund (through the North Ostrobothnia Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, Finland). In these projects we established social circus as a permanent part of the Finnish circus scene and the wellbeing services purchased by municipalities. While the first project focused on finding the good practises in social circus teaching, the second project went a little further. The aim was to prove that there are indeed wellbeing effects that can be reached with social circus. The Culture Has an Impact! seminar served as a platform for the project to both broadcast its results,
and to ignite an international discussion on the future of social circus studies globally. As an immediate result of the seminar, a network for circus researchers, The Global Institute for Circus Studies was formed. This publication can be thought to be the first practical product of this new network, as it showcases the work done by many of the founding members of the network. These articles introduce different social circus projects and evaluations going on around the world, from New Zealand and Canada to Finland, France, Italy, Ireland and even afghanistan. We are proud and happy to present this publication and hope it to be the first of many to come! [editor summary]

The Adjacent Possible

Ellingsworth, John

The Adjacent Possible is a series of conversations with artists and thinkers on four big themes: Presence, Society, Ageing & Death, and The Unknown. Each of these themes takes a view on the purpose of art in relation to important contemporary movements, and tries to think about how these ideas can illuminate the fundamental nature of the circus form.
