Philip Astley and the horsemen who invented the circus (1768-1814)

Jando, Dominique ; Binder, Paul
CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2018

In this fascinating and carefully researched book, Dominique Jando tells us when, why and how the former sergeant-major of a British Hussars regiment created the most universal form of entertainment, the Circus. It was not a chance occurrence: the place, the times and the social context, all led to this pivotal moment. Philip Astley became England's greatest showman, but if he was indeed a visionary, he was not a lone experimentalist: immediately, other equestrians followed his example and participated in the development and expansion of the circus in Europe and the Americas. This is the story, too, of these extraordinary and colorful pioneers who were Astley's contemporaries, whether pupils, competitors or colleagues: Charles Hughes, John Bill Ricketts, Philip Lailson, Antonio Franconi and a few others-including Astley's own son, John Conway Astley. Relying in large part on their contemporaries' testimony, Dominique Jando places these pioneers back in their historical and social context, as well as in the often-overlooked context of the nascent show business of the late eighteenth century-principally in Great Britain, but also in Europe and in America. John Durang : man of the american stage

Matluck Brooks, Lynn
Amherst, N.Y : Cambria Press, 2011

John Durang: Man of the American Stage takes the perspective of the theater as a crucible for the forging of American identity and culture. John Durang (1768–1822) is both an exemplary and a remarkable figure in early American theater. Among the first native-born Americans to appear on the stage, he was the first to make the theater his life. The son of French-German immigrants, he established an American theater dynasty that extends to the present day (playwright Christopher Durang). He is best remembered as a dancer, famed for his hornpipe and other dance specialties, but he was also an actor, puppeteer, singer, musician, pyrotechnician, scene painter, circus clown, acrobat, and manager of his own company. While his career focused on Philadelphia, he pioneered theater in inland towns, playing some roles in German. He toured with the first circus to perform in Canada, and played in cities throughout the northeastern United States. [editor summary]

English canadian theatre, 1765-1826

Bains, Yashdip S.
New York : Peter Lang, 1998

English Canadian Theatre, 1765-1826 focuses on the development of amateur and professional dramatic companies from Quebec City and Montreal to Atlantic Canada and Ontario. Based on primary sources like newspaper advertisements, reviews, playbill collections, and other materials, Dr. Bains's book is part of the revisionist trend to correct the earlier negative impressions about Canadian culture. It gives a concise picture of the struggle for theatre in small colonial settlements and stresses the initiative of settlers in strengthening their cultural institutions. [editor summary]
