This article describes the experiences of TOHU, a Montreal circus arts presenter, in engaging audiences as seen through the eyes of its Director of Marketing and Communications during his first year in the position. The authors use in-depth interviews and market research to analyze TOHU’s challenges as audiences develop eclectic tastes and as competition increases in the arts and entertainment industries. After detailing the new Director’s communication and subscription strategies, they review the results one year later. They discuss the challenges of programming blockbusters to increase awareness and the attractiveness of membership cards, based on the art museum model, to engage younger audiences. The concepts of a loyalty ladder and pricing tickets according to segments and benefits are reviewed, as are specific strategies aimed at eclectic audiences. [editor summary]

Le présent document constitue le rapport final de l'étude de marché pour des spectacles en arts du cirque dans les régions de la Capitale-Nationale et Chaudière-Appalaches réalisée par Zins Beauchesne et associés pour l'École de cirque de Québec. Ce rapport conclut l'étude en consignant les résultats des analyses, des entrevues avec des interlocuteurs privilégiés, du sondage auprès de la population et des projections d achalandage et de revenus. Although circus represents one of the most accessible art forms, the economics of the arts and culture has completely neglected to address this topic. This paper represents an attempt to fill in this lack by identifying the determinants of the demand for circus in Italy, both in terms of structural characteristics of the shows and socio-economic factors that impact on it. To this aim, we collect information on the tournee of the bigger circuses performing in Italy during 2005 and 2006. The results show a positive elasticity of demand to income and, differently from similar studies on performing arts, to ticket price. There also differences between circuses in the importance of numbers with animals.[author summary]

Peut-on dire que l'image qu'ont les Français du cirque est sinon une mauvaise image tout au moins une image dénaturée et mal perçue qui dessert la profession ? Qu'en outre cette image n'est pas fidèle et correspond sans doute moins à ce que sont et font les cirques qu'à cequ'ils ont autrefois été ?
