Artistes of colour : ethnic diversity and representation in the victorian circus

Ward, Steve
Philadelphia : Modern Vaudeville Press, 2021

We live in a society that places an increasing value in ethnic diversity and cultural identity. However, the contribution that performers from a variety of ethnic backgrounds made to the development of the circus in the nineteenth century is very often overlooked and largely forgotten. Pablo Fanque and Miss La La may be notable names of the period but there were many others besides. Using contemporary records and images, this book explores the wealth and depth of talented black and other ethnic performers, and the contribution they made to the success of the nineteenth century circus. These are iconic figures who should be drawn in from the margins of history and given the recognition they deserve.

The circus : a visual history

Jacob, Pascal
London, New York : Bloomsbury Visual , 2018

This beautiful book charts the development of the circus as an art form around the world, from antiquity to the present day.

Using over 200 circus related artworks from the French National Library's private collections, celebrated cultural historian Pascal Jacob tells the story of travelling entertainers and their art and trade. From nomadic animal tamers of the Dark Ages to European jugglers and acrobats of the 1800s, from the use of the circus as Soviet propaganda to the 20th-century Chinese performance art renaissance, this is an exhaustive history with a uniquely international scope.

Jacob draws on both rare and famous artworks, including prints dating from the 13th century, and paintings by Picasso and Doré. In doing so he demonstrates the circus to be a visual and physical masterpiece, constantly moving and evolving, and just as exciting an experience for audiences now as it was 1,000 years ago.

Father of the modern circus 'Billy Buttons' : the life & times of Philip Astley

Ward, Steve
Barnsley, Angleterre : Pen and Sword History, 2018

The world of the circus has a long and colourful history, but it was with a man named Philip Astley that the 'modern' circus was founded. It was 250 years ago, in April 1768, that Astley pegged out a circular ride on the banks of the Thames and gave performances of trick riding to a paying audeince. Trick riding was nothing new, so what made Astley so popular? He was an accomplished horseman, a military hero and an instincitve showman. Above all, he was an entrepreneur who realized that people would pay good money to be entertained--and to be entertained well. He created the comic character of Billy Buttons, and other acts were added to his performances: clowns, rope dancers, tumblers, and strongmen. The circus, as we might recognize it today, was born. _Father of the Modern Circus-- 'Billy Buttons'_ investigates the life and times of this veritable giant of the circus world. From his early days as an apprentice cabinetmaker and his military exploits in the 15th Dragoons to the trials and tribulations of establishing himself as a respected performer and his international successes in France and Ireland, this book gives a detailed account of the larger than life figure that was Philip Astley. [editor summary]

Philip Astley and the horsemen who invented the circus (1768-1814)

Jando, Dominique ; Binder, Paul
CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2018

In this fascinating and carefully researched book, Dominique Jando tells us when, why and how the former sergeant-major of a British Hussars regiment created the most universal form of entertainment, the Circus. It was not a chance occurrence: the place, the times and the social context, all led to this pivotal moment. Philip Astley became England's greatest showman, but if he was indeed a visionary, he was not a lone experimentalist: immediately, other equestrians followed his example and participated in the development and expansion of the circus in Europe and the Americas. This is the story, too, of these extraordinary and colorful pioneers who were Astley's contemporaries, whether pupils, competitors or colleagues: Charles Hughes, John Bill Ricketts, Philip Lailson, Antonio Franconi and a few others-including Astley's own son, John Conway Astley. Relying in large part on their contemporaries' testimony, Dominique Jando places these pioneers back in their historical and social context, as well as in the often-overlooked context of the nascent show business of the late eighteenth century-principally in Great Britain, but also in Europe and in America. The Routledge circus studies reader

Tait, Peta ; Lavers, Katie
New York : Routledge , 2016

The Routledge Circus Studies Reader offers an absorbing critical introduction to this diverse and emerging field. It brings together the work of over 30 scholars in this discipline, including Janet Davis, Helen Stoddart and Peta Tait, to highlight and address the field’s key historical, critical and theoretical issues. It is organised into three accessible sections, Perspectives, Precedents and Presents, which approach historical aspects, current issues, and the future of circus performance.

The chapters, grouped together into 13 theme-based sub-sections, provide a clear entry point into the field and emphasise the diversity of approaches available to students and scholars of circus studies. Classic accounts of performance, including pieces by Philippe Petit and Friedrich Nietzsche, are included alongside more recent scholarship in the field.

Edited by two scholars whose work is strongly connected to the dynamic world of performance, The Routledge Circus Studies Reader is an essential teaching and study resource for the emerging discipline of circus studies. It also provides a stimulating introduction to the field for lovers of circus. [editor summary]

Une histoire du cirque

Jacob, Pascal

Juggling trajectories : Gandini Juggling 1991-2015

Wilson, Thomas J M
Londres : Gandini Press, 2016

Gandini Juggling have been one of the world’s most prolific and adventurous circus companies for over two decades. Founded with the aim of fusing juggling and dance, they have continually pushed the artistic and technical boundaries of juggling, resulting in performances that delight, astound, and defy easy categorisation. Iconic and iconoclastic in equal measures, Gandini Juggling have changed the perception of what juggling is and what it can be – transforming what might be considered a parlour-trick into a rich and distinctive art form in its own right.

In this book Thomas J M Wilson maps out the nature and growth of this pioneering and innovative company, from their formation in 1991 to 2015. Covering the breadth of their diverse output, he examines not only Gandini Juggling’s cutting-edge experiments that blend juggling with other art forms, but also their spectacular street art events, virtuoso juggling to music, and theatrically-charged performances.

Wilson takes a distinctive approach, providing a catalogue of over 25 of Gandini Juggling’s major performances, alongside accounts charting the trajectories of the development of their working practices, and accompanied by in-depth essays examining key features of the company’s work. Supported by an extensive array of full-colour photographs and contributions from many of the company’s key collaborators, this book is a uniquely rich and detailed insight into Gandini Juggling’s ground-breaking approach to circus. Beneath the big top : a social history of the circus in Britain

Ward, Steve
Barnsley (UK) : Pen & Sword History, 2014

Beneath the Big Top is a social history of the circus, from its ancient roots to the rise of the 'modern' tented travelling shows. A performer and founder of a circus group, Steve Ward draws on eye-witness accounts and contemporary interviews to explore the triumphs and disasters of the circus world. He reveals the stories beneath the big top during the golden age of the circus and the lives of circus folk, which were equally colourful outside the ring : - Pablo Fanque, Britain's first black circus proprietor; - The Chipperfield dynasty, who started out in 1684 on the frozen Thames; - Katie Sandwina, world's strongest woman and part time crime-fighter; - The Sylvain brothers, who fell in love with the same woman in the ring [editor summary]

Astley's Circus : the story of an english hussar

Rendell, Mike
North Charleston, South Carolina : CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2014

This is the story of one of the most famous and popular entrepreneurs of the 18th Century - a man dubbed "the father of the modern circus". Philip Astley was a teenager who yearned for adventure and above all who wanted to work with horses. He served in the British Army in the Seven Years War, learning how to train horses for battle, and then left to find his fortune in London giving riding lessons and putting on exhibitions of trick riding. In doing so he came up with a formula for entertaining thousands, with his demonstrations of clowning on horseback, juggling, rope walking and acrobatics. He dazzled with fireworks, he impressed with colour and he amazed his audiences with re-enactments of battles and sieges. In doing so he launched the modern circus, building circus premises across Europe and inspiring others to follow the trail which he blazed. It is a story of courage and resilience, and of how one man, in the right place at the right time, achieved a remarkable success in the field of popular entertainment. [editor summary]

The greatest shows on earth

Simon, Linda
London : Reaktion Books, 2014

Traveling back to the circus’s early days, Linda Simon takes us to eighteenth-century hippodromes in Great Britain and intimate one-ring circuses in nineteenth-century Paris, where Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso became enchanted with aerialists and clowns. She introduces us to P. T. Barnum, James Bailey, and the enterprising Ringling Brothers and reveals how they created the golden age of American circuses. Moving forward to the whimsical Circus Oz in Australia and to New York City’s Big Apple Circus and the grand spectacle of Cirque du Soleil, she shows how the circus has transformed in recent years. At the center of the story are the people—trick riders and tightrope walkers, sword swallowers and animal trainers, contortionists and clowns—that created the sensational, raucous, and sometimes titillating world of the circus. The American circus

Weber, Susan ; Ames, Kenneth L. ; Wittmann, Matthew
New York : Yale University Press, 2012

The circus is a source of nostalgia for Americans of all ages, either from memories of attending P. T. Barnum's "Greatest Show on Earth," or through the colorful evocations in many movies, television programs, and books. Interest in the circus phenomenon is unflagging, yet there have been few publications that look closely at how the circus's European origins were refashioned for an American audience. Lavishly illustrated and carefully researched, this volume explores how American culture, values, demography, and business practices altered the fundamental nature of the European circus, and how, by the end of the 19th century, they had transformed it into a distinctly American pastime.

At the peak of its cultural significance, the circus was a sophisticated combination of theater and business, and made effective use of advertising, train travel, and hyperbole. The subjects in The American Circus reflect this complexity, ranging widely from thematic explorations of circus music and elephants to more closely focused studies of objects such as circus toys, souvenirs, and performers' costumes. The book also explores the dark and even nefarious side of the circus, and its associations with marginalized dimensions of American life and culture. With contributions from leading scholars, this stylishly designed volume aims to identify the salient features of an Americanized cultural product and to analyze its appeal for American audiences.

Les aventures de Joseph Grimaldi

Dickens, Charles ; Grimaldi, Joseph ; Hoepffner, Bernard ; Manguel, Alberto ; Berti, Eduardo
Paris : Nil, 2012

The Victorian clown

Bratton, Jacky ; Featherstone, Ann
Cambridge : Cambridge University Press, 2006

The Victorian Clown is a micro-history of mid-Victorian comedy, spun out of the life and work of two professional clowns. Their previously unpublished manuscripts - James Frowde's account of his young life with the famous Henglers' circus in the 1850s and Thomas Lawrence's 1871 gag book - offer unique, unmediated access to the grass roots of popular entertainment. Through them this book explores the role of the circus clown at the height of equestrian entertainment in Britain, when the comic managed audience attention for the riders and acrobats, parodying their skills in his own tumbling and contortionism, and also offered a running commentary on the times through his own 'wheezes' - stand-up comedy sets. Plays in the ring connect the circus to the stage, and both these men were also comic singers, giving a sharp insight into popular music just as it was being transformed by the new institution of music hall.
