Philip Astley and the horsemen who invented the circus (1768-1814)

Jando, Dominique ; Binder, Paul
CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2018

In this fascinating and carefully researched book, Dominique Jando tells us when, why and how the former sergeant-major of a British Hussars regiment created the most universal form of entertainment, the Circus. It was not a chance occurrence: the place, the times and the social context, all led to this pivotal moment. Philip Astley became England's greatest showman, but if he was indeed a visionary, he was not a lone experimentalist: immediately, other equestrians followed his example and participated in the development and expansion of the circus in Europe and the Americas. This is the story, too, of these extraordinary and colorful pioneers who were Astley's contemporaries, whether pupils, competitors or colleagues: Charles Hughes, John Bill Ricketts, Philip Lailson, Antonio Franconi and a few others-including Astley's own son, John Conway Astley. Relying in large part on their contemporaries' testimony, Dominique Jando places these pioneers back in their historical and social context, as well as in the often-overlooked context of the nascent show business of the late eighteenth century-principally in Great Britain, but also in Europe and in America. A history of the circus

Speaight, George
New York : Barnes and Company, 1980

This is a monumental history of that universally trancing, international phenomenon-the circus. It is the most complete chronicle of circuses and circus lore ever written in the english language. No reader can fail to be impressed by the scope of its coverage and the vividness of its descriptions. No lover of circus wonders can remain unmoved while reading of the people and performances that illuminated circus life.

The author reveals the origins of circus acts among Greek and Roman acrobats and medieval minstrels, tracing their development through eighteenth-century
fairs where they were combined with displays of horse riding in a circular ring to form a new style of presentation. He then follows the evolution of circuses during the nineteenth century, showing how novel acts and exhibitions of animal training were introduced to produce the circus we know today.

Mr. Speaight demonstrates the special way in which the circus grew in the United States, where three-ring circuses were transported over vast distances by railroad; and he describes the Golden Age of the circus in Europe, when circus riders ranked with ballet stars in popular esteem. Finally, he provides an up-to-the-minute account of circuses in the world today.

The author's account is based on many years of research in unpublished manuscripts and museum collections, and he reverses some long.held errors of previous writers on the subject. His book contains exhaustive notes and an appendix, listing circus buildings in London, New york and paris, which brings together information never before printed, giving the book great value as a permanent work of reference. Transatlantic journeys : John Bill Ricketts and the Edinburgh Equestrian Circus

Baston, Kim
Popular Entertainment Studies vol 4, n° 2 : p. 5-58, 2013

John Bill Ricketts is generally credited as the founder of American circus, setting up a circus in Philadelphia in 1793. This paper examines evidence from Ricketts’ early career in England and Scotland and argues that the successful transplant of the early modern circus form initiated by Philip Astley into America rested on Ricketts’ experiences with a small circus in Edinburgh, established by the equestrian performers George Jones and William Parker. Not only did this circus provide a repertoire and a business model which Ricketts replicated in his American circuses but, crucially provided him with a network of experienced performers whom he subsequently employed. Ricketts has often been presented in terms redolent of the myth of the self-made man, an individual single-handedly forging his way to success, a myth that has particular resonance in the American context, and is particularly attractive in a founder figure. His achievements in America, though, were enabled through lineage and collaboration. The first circus in America owed much to the first circus in Scotland. [editor summary]

The first circus in eastern Canada

Moy, James S.
Theatre Research in Canada = Recherches théâtrales au Canada, 1980

The British-born John B. Ricketts (1769-1802) introduced the first large scale circus to the United States in 1793, and to Canada following his arrival in Montreal in August 1797. His circus remained in Montreal until May 1798. The author notes that a typical evenings' bill featured a series of equestrian acts separated by novelty stage entertainments, usually concluding with a pantomime. These activities alternated between the stage and circus ring. After leaving Montreal, Ricketts' circus moved on for a short stay (May to August 1798) in Quebec City. The circus returned to Montreal for a week's performance in October 1798. [Brendan O'Donnell]
