Fatal attractions : the ethics of persuasion in the animal-based entertainment industry

Casal, Paula ; Montes Franceschini, Marcarena
2023

The animal entertainment industry includes different practices. Some consist in torturing an animal to death, as in bullfighting and countless other popular traditions, while others involve watching an animal in captivity, which can be another form of torture. Perhaps the most profitable practice is forcing very intelligent animals to perform the same routine several times daily in zoos and aquariums containing marine mammals, or in circuses containing terrestrial mammals. These businesses then present the animals in whatever way that makes the practice appear less immoral, claim to have education and conservation as their mission, and present their entertainment businesses as altruistic charities. Disseminating their misleading discourse is unethical.

What can magic reveal about the brain

Kuhn, Gustav ; Thomas, Cyril
2022

The art of magic relies on tricking our brains into experiencing the impossible. Years of
performance experience has allowed magicians to refine and perfect their deceptive
techniques, and scientists have now started to investigate these techniques to help uncover
some of the mysteries of the human brain. The Science of Magic has become a field of its own
right, and huge advances have been made in furthering our understanding why these illusions
work. We review the latest scientific research on magic and misdirection and explore what
these deceptive techniques tells us about perception, memory and reasoning.

“Today for the last time”?
On the cultural meanings of circus and the avant-gardes – some final provocations

Hildbrand, Mirjam ; Jürgens, Anna-Sophie ; Essery, Aiden
2022

This final chapter is a reflection on the coexisting juxtapositions, ambiguities, contradictions and paradoxical dynamics revealed in this volume: past and present, tradition and revolution, “elitist” and “pop”, “high” and “low”, art and entertainment. It tentatively maps how the meaning of “circus” as shifted in “avant-garde” contexts, and what role the “culture of narration” plays between them. In light of circus history, this chapter critically reflects on what historical avant-gardists perceived and interpreted as circus – how their “idea of circus” can be defined – and also discusses some of the cultural interconnections between modern circus and the “popular avant-gardes” that have not yet been discussed in depth in this volume.

Avant-garde gestures and contemporaneity in today's circus

Leroux, Louis Patrick
2022

Contemporary circus – drawing on traditional practices, apparatuses and a number of their spectacular conventions – emphasises the performance of exceptional human acrobatic feats, ingenuity, or spectacular, often counter-intuitive inventiveness. The contemporary is not necessarily of the avant-garde, but defining the contours and ethos of circus’s contemporaneity help explore its manifestations of the avant-garde. There are examples on the edges, where circus and dance, burlesque, performance art, non-acting and political engagement coexist. Most of the avant-garde practices are featured at international festivals. They are not outside of the norms, they actually set them. This chapter explores the intersection and, at times, complicated cohabitation between conception of the contemporary and of the avant-garde in current circus practice and reception. It first defines and contextualises contemporaneity in today’s circus, then proposes a dialectics of contemporary circus and concludes with enactments of the avant-garde and how they relate to our current understanding of circus.

Political clowns, strong women and animal-free
Circus reimagined through 1970s avant-garde political theatre

Mullett, Jane ; Tait, Peta
2022

The radicalism of 1970s’ social movements manifest in the arts and directly in innovative theatre that co-opted circus. The anti-war, pro-worker and feminist politics imbedded in the avant-garde theatre of the 1970s were expressly reimaged as circus action that was different and political. This theatrical circus expanded the circus form and the origins of contemporary circus from Circus Oz to Cirque du Soleil can be found in the idealisation of circus at this time. But did the circus appeal to performance activists for its romantic ideal of a community living on the margins outside society or for its physical action that left impressions of thrill and excitement in the popular imaginary? This chapter explores how this reimagined acrobatic circus with strong women but without animal acts was often raucous, mutinous and irrepressible, and argues that performance activists satirised circus as much as theatre.

The aesthetics of queer work
Loïe Fuller's exhausting life as performance art in Stéphanie Di Giusto's The Dancer (2016)

Lim, Wesley
2022

Loïe Fuller’s mesmerising Serpentine Dance appears to many viewers as a floating, morphing and queer image of voluminous fabric – erasing the effort behind the taxing physicality and creating an indeterminate (re)presentation. The queerness and variety of American vaudeville stages, the Folies Bergère and the circus in Paris provided Fuller with a space to experiment and transgress stereotypical gender roles in work. Stéphanie Di Giusto’s 2016 biopic The Dancer highlights Fuller’s perpetual physicality throughout the cinematic depiction: constant shots of her injured and exhausted body; corporeal exertion while dancing. Engaging with queer discourses and tying the depiction of Fuller into larger discussions of the circus as queer space, this chapter argues that the film depicts Fuller’s dance and life as perpetually exhausting work and a struggle for a queer identity; this albeit elusive enterprise reflected her ephemeral dances and the draining variété life.

Glam clowning
From Dada to Gaga – a conversation with Le Pustra

Jürgens, Anna-Sophie
2022

This chapter examines how avant-garde aesthetics and style have (re)appeared in popular entertainment and contemporary performance since the late 1970s. It focuses on the fantastically long life and performance traditions emerging from a specific Dada costume from 1923. This costume was reinterpreted in 1979 by David Bowie, reinvented by Klaus Nomi and, with explicit reference to both, refashioned by Lady Gaga in 2010. However, this costume appears most extravagantly and elaborately in the contemporary performances of “Vaudeville’s Darkest Muse”, Le Pustra. Le Pustra is the artistic director of Le Pustra’s Kabarett der Namenlosen, a contemporary reimagining of the cabarets and nightclubs of 1920s Berlin; he features in the blockbuster drama Babylon Berlin, and regularly performs on the international circuit in cabaret, burlesque and variety. Called an avant-garde artist, his work is inspired by both the historical avant-gardes and circus/vaudeville aesthetics. In conversation with Le Pustra, this chapter analyses the artist’s interpretation of the Dada costume and his understanding of “avant-garde” and “circus”.

“Glitter and broken bones”
Professional wrestling, circus, avant-garde and the radical participatory body

Warden, Claire
2022

Professional wrestling first emerged with the advent of nineteenth/twentieth-century music hall, fairground and, indeed, circus. This liminal sport-art is rarely read as avant-garde practice, however, and for good reason given its continued association with mainstream global capitalism and its awkward history of rightist politics, misogyny and racism. This chapter proposes an alternative narrative, analysing the subversive performing body as a connective nodal point for the disparate histories of circus, the avant-garde and professional wrestling. Approaching the (specifically British independent) contemporary professional wrestling as embodied, collaborative, avant-garde exhibitionism destabilises definitional readings of wrestling and enables new categorisation as a contemporary performance practice with similarities to drag and burlesque. Grounded in historiographical research, yet impacted by the author’s practice-based experience, this chapter makes a case for an integrated rereading of circus, the avant-garde and professional wrestling by focusing on the radical, participatory body.
